Overview

Found singly or in large schools, hiding under ledges and rocks during the day, in estuaries and tide pools, of open coastal areas, but can be found in fresh water lakes in Africa. They are bottom feeders using their mouth barbels to detect food.
They feed nocturnally on benthic crustaceans, fish, molluscs, and worms.

These catfish are mimicked by the Convict Blenny - Pholidichthys leucotaenia

Catfish have venomous spines in the fins which can inflict painful wounds.
Repeated stings from Plotosus lineatus may result in death.
