Overview

Found singly or in loose schools, sheltering under Sargassum seaweed mats floating in the ocean, where they are camouflaged with the colour and pattern of their surroundings and growing their appendages to match their surroundings. Often close to the shore, but can be found far out in the oceans.
They feed on small fish and shrimps that also seek refuge in these floating mats.
Widespread Atlantic, Indo-Pacific.

Frogfish are masters at camouflage and will change to match their surroundings. They lure their prey with a stalk between their eyes that copies the movements of its prey. Their mouth can open and expand to the width of their bodies to engulf their prey which can be the size of their own bodies!
