Overview

The orangespotted goby is a small reef-edge fish that shares a burrow with the snapper shrimp Alpheus floridanus, usually a pair of them, and acts as their lookout. Its home is shallow, silty, open bottoms around reefs, in less than 9m of water.

The goby and its shrimps are close partners. The burrow gives the fish the cover it depends on, and in return the goby stands at the entrance, watching for danger.

Its diet is mainly small sea snails, along with decapods, ostracods and isopods.

Its range takes in Bermuda, southern Florida, the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean, reaching south to Venezuela and Colombia. No other species is known in its genus.
