Overview

Found singly, or in schools, lurking around rocky outcrops, and weedy edges, waiting for their prey, over clearwater, vegetated creeks, freshwater lakes, pools, and rivers.
They feed on ducklings, fish, muskrats, and snakes, biting their heads off first, and then swallowing the rest of their prey.
Widespread North America

These fish are sometimes cannibalistic as they tend to be the only species present in a given body of water. They may also be heavily infested with parasites.
