Generally stocky body with very distinct black lateral bar crossing most of the body after the gill plate. Large mouth with a jaw that extends past the eye ( a key feature of this species versus the similar spotted bass). Individuals can be various shades of green depending on the water shed, with individuals from Florida being particularly dark in coloration.
