Overview

Found singly or in schools foraging for food over rock and weedy areas of lagoons and seaward reefs rich in algae and seaweed growth.
Juveniles over reef flats.

Goatfish have two barbels extending form the chin, these are used to probe the sand for food such as worms, brittle stars, crustaceans and small fish.
They often have other fish in tow which hoover up any creatures left behind.
Some Goatfish can rapidly change colour and spots that were there magically disappear!

The Parupeneus crassilabris and Parupeneus trifasciatus are distinct species. They are misnamed and identified as which is which. Is it true that Parupeneus bifasciatus has been changed to Parupeneus trifasciatus or what exactly?

Parupeneus bifasciatus was misapplied and has has been changed to Parupeneus trifasciatus. Check out fish base!
