Overview

Found singly, or in small schools, during spring, in shallow brackish waters of coastal lagoons and estuaries, the rest of the year found in deeper waters, over sandy bottoms, seagrass beds and in surf zones.

Porgies are found in tropical as well as cooler waters, and are bottom-dwelling carnivores. Most species possess grinding, molar-like teeth, for eating crustaceans.
