You have just made it unanimous! 2 for 2. Yesterday I was in the same area and started talking to gent that was fishing. He suggested it was tilapia too. Didn't have scientific name but he is close enough. A few googled images and I am confident you nailed it. Thank you. As to the part about the change of coloration and the cause of it; I am pretty sure you nailed that part too. The heron stabbed it initially dropped it repeated the stabbing several times. Ouch! took about 5 attempts to swallow.

  2. So I thought it might be easy because of the stripes! However after looking at the fish in your area those stripes are missing and after blowing up the pictures the fish is a different colour to start with, I think as it was about to be eaten it was obviously "scared shitless" and changed its colour and produced stripes as fish often do! So the nearest I can get is maybe one of these two fish because of their cheek marks Mud Sunfish - Acantharchus pomotis Mozambique tilapia - Oreochromis mossambicus

Nice pictures, they were just trying to survive as would any critter I suppose but that is a big bird to hide from!

I'm the guy to took the picture. Great Blue Heron caught this good sized fish in pond which had been shrinking for several weeks. Trying to understand how fish this size could stay alive in a pond that small (estimate 100 yards / 30 yards) Not much over a foot deep. Thanks in advance. Norm
