It sure looks like something that belongs at great depths. These look like adults, do they not? They were about 7 and 5 cm, respectively, which I understand is the adult length. Either way, I'm glad I came across this species - entirely new to me, and I got to learn a bit about it.

Juveniles can be found on reefs otherwise they tend to be very deep! Thank you for the information.
Black brotula - I updated the title, and added the information I found about the species. I sure had never seen or even heard of it.
So what did they think the fish was?
