Could be, or a trumpetfish - Aulostomus maculatus, but I could not see what the tail was like and again not sure in the pic how big the snout was.
Will put back into unidentified to see what the community think!
I can see why you might think this is a Harlequin Bass but I am not yet convinced. This was not like any Harlequin Bass I have ever seen and surely way too large! This fish was at least 8 inches long and moved with a stiff back. The dorsal fin was not at all prominent. It was very shy and moved off immediately. I originally guessed it might be something like a juvenile trumpetfish or cornetfish but these don't fit well either.
Anybody have any idea what this is? Taken in the shallow water seagrass on the bay side of Islamorada, Florida.
