Found around the world mainly in deep warmer waters but can be found over inshore waters and in arctic waters.
They feed nocturnally on cephalopods, crustaceans, fish and tunicates.

They are oceanic fish that live in warmer waters but have been known at feeding periods to find their way to the subarctic.
