Found in schools, in murky and also pristine mountain waters, over slow moving waters of canals, weedy ditches and warm springs thick with vegetation. They vary greatly in colour and pattern.
They feed on detritus, small insects and zooplankton.

Established elsewhere mainly for mosquito control.
