Found in schools in murky and also pristine mountain waters over slow moving waters of canals, weedy ditches and warm springs thick with vegetation.
They feed on detritus, small insects and zooplankton.
They vary greatly in colour and pattern.

Established elsewhere mainly for mosquito control.
