Found in schools, in both freshwater and silty waters, over bays, tidal creeks, mangrove estuaries, coastal reefs and lower reaches of streams. Highly territorial.
They feed on detritus and plankton.
Juveniles found singly or in small schools.

Widespread Indo-West Pacific

Unusually these compressed diamond shaped fish have scales on the Dorsal Fin and sometimes on the Anal Fin.
