Description

Also known as Common Barbel, European Barbel, River Barbel.

Found in schools, occasionally in lakes, but usually over gravel bottoms, hiding under overhanging trees and bridges during the day, dispersing at night to feed, in lowland reaches of clear, warm, medium sized rivers, with fast currents.
They feed on crustaceans, insect larvae, benthic invertebrates, mayflies, and molluscs.
Juveniles found in very shallow bottoms of shorelines.

Widespread Europe

Very common in the aquarium trade.
