Barred-fin Moray (Gymnothorax zonipectis)

Also known as Bartail Moray, Bartail Moray Eel, Zonipectis Moray

Description

Also known as Bartail Moray, Bartail Moray Eel, Zonipectis Moray.

Found singly, during the day in deep caves, crevices, under ledges, and amongst rubble, of outer reef slopes, out in the open feeding at night.
They feed nocturnally on benthic crustaceans and small fish.
Can "take a fancy too divers" if they are not careful.
Length - 50cm
Depth - 4-40m
Widespread Indo-Pacific

Morays open and close their mouths to move water through their gills for respiration.
This behaviour can often be seen as a threat especially towards divers, in fact this is far from the truth, they are very shy creatures and will only attack if provoked! Ref: https://www.fishbase.se/summary/5397
