Also known as Black-striped Sweetlip, Diagonal-banded Grunt, Diagonal-banded Sweetlips, Goldman's Sweetlips, Lesson's Thicklip, Lined Blubberlip, Lined Sweetlips, Many-lined Sweetlips, Oblique-banded Sweetlips, Oblique-banded Thicklip, Oriental Dogfish, Silver-banded Sweetlips, Striped Sweetlips, Sweetlips, Two Diagonal-banded Sweetlips, Yellowband Sweetlips, Yellow-lined Sweetlips.

Found singly or in schools, during the day along coral slopes, out at night hunting for food over clearwater, shallow, protected, open sand flats and seagrass beds, of lagoons and seaward reefs.
They feed nocturnally on benthic invertebrates.
Juveniles found singly, over shallow protected reefs.

In some areas of the world 'Grunts' are better known as 'Sweetlips' distinguished from other species by their very large rubbery lips.
'Grunts'because they "grunt," the grunting sound is produced by their flat teeth plates rubbing together and this is amplified by their air bladders.
