Description

Also known as Doctorfish, Headband Surgeonfish, Lancetfish, Thorntail, Thorntail Fish, Whiteband Surgeonfish, Whitebar, Whitebar Tang, White-throated Surgeonfish.

Found in schools over boulder strewn surge zones of coral and rocky reefs.
They feed on filamentous algae.
Length - 25cm
Depth - 0-85m
Widespread Western Central Pacific

Surgeonfish have a blade like spine in the tail that points outwards when bent, unicorns have two hook-like plates along the tail, these are used for defence and are as sharp as a surgeons scalpel, hence the name "Surgeonfish".
