Description

Also known as Bocina, Buccine, Common Northern Buccinum, Common Northern Welk, Common Whelk, Edible Whelk, European Waved Whelk, European Whelk, Northern Whelk, True Whelk, Waved Buccine.

Found on hard, soft and sludgy bottoms, amongst gravel, rocks and sand substrates of sub-tidal reefs.
They feed by scavenging on small crustaceans, echinoderms, molluscs and worms.
Length - 10cm
Depth - 0-600m
Widespread Arctic, Northern Atlantic, Mediterranean

They lay up to 2000 capsules and each capsule can contain 1000 - 3000 eggs.
Only a small portion of eggs will hatch from each capsule usually 13 - 14 the rest being used for food for the developing embryos.
