Found singly or in small shivers, during the day resting on the bottom, dispersing at night to hunt for food among crevices and around rocky outcrops, of lagoons and seaward reefs.
They feed on crabs, fish, lobster, octopus, rays, other sharks and squid.

Sand tigers are the only shark known to come to the surface and gulp air. They store the air in their stomachs, which allows them to float motionless in the water, seeking prey.
