Found singly, resting or walking, over sand and shell seabeds, in estuaries and over the continental shelves. Can vary in depth of colour when threatened, from cream with brown blotches to red, hence it's common name!
They feed on crustaceans, small fish, and worms.

The pelvic fins act like legs as the fish walks along the bottom of the ocean. They also grunt or make chirping noises by expelling gas from their bladders. French term for the word Gurnard means to grunt. Ref: https://www.fishbase.se/summary/Chelidonichthys-kumu
