Also known as Brazilian Cichlid, Eartheater, Mother-of-Pearl, Pearl Eartheater, Pearl Horseface, Pearlscale, Pearlscale Eartheater.

Found singly, pairs, or in schools, over fresh and brackish waters, on sandy substrate, over coastal drainage ditches, lagoons, lakes and rivers, of eastern and southern Brazil and Uruguay.
They feed by sifting through the sand for small insects, invertebrates, plants and worms.
