Found singly, over coral and rough rocky bottoms, inshore, and offshore, often very deep, over the continental shelf, rich in algae cover.
They feed on fish and benthic invertebrates.
Juveniles are patterned but fade with age.

Depth - 1-400m
Widespread North East Atlantic, Mediterranean
