Description

Also known as Barbells, Frogfish, Portuguese Toadfish.

Found singly, often buried in sand or rock crevices, with just their eyes showing, over shallow, coastal bays and lagoons.
They feed on crustaceans, small fish and molluscs.
Length - 50cm
Depth - 10-50m
Widespread Eastern Atlantic, Mediterranean

Toadfish can make a load croaking noise with their swim bladders. They breathe air when out of water for up to 24hrs. Their mouth can open and expand to the width of their bodies to engulf large prey. Has poisonous spines. Ref: https://www.fishbase.se/summary/5429
