Also known as Black-striped Dampier, Dampiera Dottyback, Dampiera Grouper, Dark-striped Dottyback, Devil Fish, Emperor Devil, Firetail Dottyback, Giant Dottyback, Red Dottyback, Red Grouper, Redtail Dottyback, Spotty-sail Dottyback.

Found singly or in small loose schools, close to the shelter of coral and rocks, over silty, shallow gutters, passages, reef flats, slopes and in tide-pools.
They feed on small fish.

Depth - 2-20m
Widespread Western Pacific

Frequently found in the aquarium trade.

Dottybacks are usually small and often brightly coloured.
They live inside the reefs structure, often at the back of caves and are very territorial and aggressive.
