Also known as Blackspot Surgeonfish, Doctorfish, Dussumieri Surgeonfish, Dussumieri Tang, Eye-striped Surgeonfish, Hawaiian Surgeonfish, Lancetfish, Ornate Surgeonfish, Pencil Tang, Penciled Surgeon, Penciled Surgeonfish, Thorntail, Thorntail Fish.

Found singly or in small schools, over deep coastal reef slopes, shipwrecks and outer reef walls rich in algae growth.
They feed on algae and detritus.
Juveniles over rocky reefs rich in algae growth.
Length - 50cm
Depth - 10-130m
Widespread Indo-Pacific

Surgeonfish have a blade like spine in the tail that points outwards when bent, unicorns have two hook-like plates along the tail, these are used for defence and are as sharp as a surgeons scalpel, hence the name "Surgeonfish".
