Found in loose schools over shallow sandy bottoms and seagrass beds of estuaries, rivers, coastal shorelines and tidepools.
They feed on algae, fish, insects and benthic invertebrates.

Widespread Indo-Pacific

Grunters have this name because of the loud grunting noise that is produced by the swimbladder. (edit)
