Description

Also known as Berry Coral, Mushroom Coral, Mushroom Rock, Pimpled Rock, Rainbow Polyp, Stubby Anemone, Zoantharia.

Found singly or in colonies, in both shallow and deep waters on the sea floor, amongst coral debris, around harbours and shipwrecks. They live symbiotically with algae and feed from their by products. Varies in colour, has short ball like tentacles, that cannot be retracted, and often has commensal shrimps over it.
They feed on algae, crustaceans, echinoderms and zooplankton.

Discosomatidae Similar to sea anemones, (a cross between a stony coral and an anemone, looks like an anemone but has no skeleton!) but are flat, have short club-tipped tentacles or multiple branched fringing tentacles.
They are adept at taking over large areas of reef.
