Found in turbid, murky waters, of canals, estuaries, flooded fields, lakes, ponds, large rivers, and swamps.
They feed on fish fry, aquatic plants, and shrimps.

Widespread Asia - introduced into Australian waters and is highly invasive.

These fish remain buried under mud in the dry season, possessing an accessory air-breathing organ and are able to live for days and weeks out of water if the air breathing organs are kept moist.
