Found in schools, sheltering during the day, in crevices, under river banks, and rocks, dispersing at night foraging for food, in well oxygenated estuaries, lakes, rivers, and streams, preferring deeper waters in the summer.
They feed on crayfish, fish, invertebrates, insect larvae, and molluscs.

Widespread Arctic, Europe
