Found in warm water pools, of small, to large rivers, with lots of vegetation.
They feed on crustaceans, insects, plant matter, and worms.

Widespread North America

This is the only Cichlid native to the United States. Originally from the Rio Grande drainage of Texas but has been introduced to other areas of North America.
