Description

Also known as Zebrasoma velifer, Doctorfishes, Lancetfishes, Sailfin Tang, Striped Sailfin Tang and Striped Zebrasoma.

Found singly or in small groups in lagoons and outer reefs.
They have greatly enlarged dorsal and Anal Fins.
They feed on plankton and algae.
Length - 40cm
Depth - 4-40m
Widespread Pacific

Surgeonfish have a blade like spine in the tail that points outwards when bent, unicorns have two hook-like plates along the tail, these are used for defence and are as sharp as a surgeons scalpel, hence the name "Surgeonfish".
