Description

Also known as Doctorfishes and Lancetfishes, Dussumieri Surgeonfish, Dussumieri Tang, Eyestriped Surgeonfish, Pencilled Surgeonfish, Pencil Tang and Ornate Sturgeonfish.

Found singly or in small groups in protected seaward reefs often around shipwrecks usually in moderately deep waters.
Juveniles usually found in inshore shallow waters with good algae cover.
They feed on plankton and algae.
Length - 50cm
Depth - 10-130m
Widespread Indo-Pacific

Surgeonfish have a blade like spine in the tail that points outwards when bent, unicorns have two hook-like plates along the tail, these are used for defence and are as sharp as a surgeons scalpel, hence the name "Surgeonfish".
