Found singly, pairs or small groups on steep slopes and drop off's as well as reef flats and shallow lagoons, in caves, crevices and under ledges, sheltering during the day coming out at night to feed on zooplankton and bottom dwelling crustaceans.

Males incubate their eggs inside their mouths, as the egg masses increase in size they can be found with wide open mouths where they shift the eggs around to aerate the egg masses.
