Found singly or in loose groups on clear inner reef crests,
slopes and reef gutters.
This is one of the smallest surgeonfish, identified by dotty appearance and yellow eye.
Juveniles sometimes all yellow with blue eye.
They feed on plankton and algae.

Depth - 1-100m
Widespread Indo-Pacific
Surgeonfish have a blade like spine in the tail that points outwards when bent, unicorns have two hook-like plates along the tail, these are used for defence and are as sharp as a surgeons scalpel, hence the name "Surgeonfish".
Some species are venomous.
