Found in loose schools, over shallow sandy bottoms and seagrass beds, of estuaries, rivers, and coastal shorelines.
They feed on algae, fish, insects, and benthic invertebrates.
Juveniles found over sandy bottoms of intertidal areas and in tide-pools.
