Description

Also known as Doctorfishes, Lancetfishes, Scopas Tang, Brown Tang, Brown Scopas Tang, Brown Tang, Brown Sailfin Tang, Brown Sailing Tang, Brown Sailfin Surgeonfish, Brown Sailfish Surgeonfish, Twotone Tang and Twotone Surgeonfish.

Found singly or in small groups on protected shallow reefs with good algae growth.
Identified by the dark, almost triangular body with white spine.
Juveniles hide in staghorn coral.
They feed on plankton and algae.
Length - 20cm
Depth - 1-50m
Widespread Indo-Pacific

Surgeonfish have a blade like spine in the tail that points outwards when bent, unicorns have two hook-like plates along the tail, these are used for defence and are as sharp as a surgeons scalpel, hence the name "Surgeonfish".
Some species are venomous.
